Feldon Shelter Hawk’s Nest V2 Wide: our first season on the Land Cruiser

The Feldon Shelter Hawk's Nest V2 is a hardshell aluminium rooftop tent from New Zealand, sold in Poland by PACK IT in Rumia. We first slept in the Standard version at Abenteuer & Allrad in Bad Kissingen in June 2026, and since the end of July the Wide version has lived on the roof of our Land Cruiser 76. In one sentence: it opens in under a minute and the mattress is very comfortable, but the inside has more hard metal than you want around a toddler.

Verdict

Good for: couples and families with a large 4x4 who want the bed ready in about a minute.
Not for: smaller SUVs or roofs with a low load rating. At 88 kg the Wide needs a vehicle and rack rated for at least 100 kg dynamic load.
What we like: build quality, a properly comfortable mattress, 12V sockets inside the tent.
What bothers us: lights that are too strong for an evening, plenty of metal to bump into, the weight.
List price: 16,800 PLN for the Wide (PACK IT, October 2026). Ours came through a barter partnership.

How we tested it

So far the test covers two tents and two very different trips. The first was the drive to Abenteuer & Allrad, Europe's biggest off-road and overlanding fair, with a Standard Hawk's Nest V2 on the roof and our nights spent in the fair's camp area.

The second was the first trip with our own Wide: a lake in Kashubia, with Franek, our son, who is almost two. The weather gave us a bit of everything, rain on some days and sun on others. The car is our 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser GRJ76. The tent sits on four Front Runner 1425 mm load bars, two of the Land Cruiser 70 gutter-mount kits.

Spec vs reality

The maker's figures below come from the PACK IT product page. We have not weighed the tent ourselves.

What we like

Build quality

Build quality is the thing we would mention first. According to Feldon Shelter the shell is TIG-welded aluminium with a Dulux Duralloy powder coat, the hardware is 316 marine-grade stainless steel, and the fabric is their 360 g X-Canvas with YKK zips.

The mattress

The 60 mm ErgoCell mattress is very comfortable. On a roof, after a day of driving, that matters more than any number on the spec sheet, and it is the part of the tent we would least want to change.

Sockets inside

The pre-wired 12V panel means charging happens inside the tent, with no cables pushed through a zip. It is a small thing, and it turned out to be one of the features we like most.

Under a minute to open

Two latches, then the gas struts lift the lid. It takes us under a minute. Feldon quotes under 30 seconds. With a toddler around, a minute suits us fine.

What annoys us

Lights for work, not for evenings

The built-in LEDs are strong. They light up the inside properly when you are looking for something, but for a slow evening atmosphere they are simply too much.

Metal everywhere

There are a lot of hard metal parts inside and around the tent, and you learn to move carefully so you don't hit your head. With Franek, who is almost two, this is the thing we watch most.

Weight and roof load

At 88 kg the Wide is not a light tent. Feldon asks for a roof rack with three bars or a platform with at least six mounting points, bars at least 900 mm apart, and at least 100 kg of dynamic load rating for both the vehicle and the rack. Check the small print for your own roof and bars before you buy.

Standard or Wide

We have slept in both, on two separate trips. The figures are the maker's.

Feldon Shelter says What we found
Setup time Under 30 seconds Under a minute for us
Mattress 60 mm two-layer ErgoCell, 135 × 218 cm (Wide) Very comfortable
Interior light 12V LED with adjustable settings Strong, good for finding things, too bright for atmosphere
Power Pre-wired 12V plug and switch panel Sockets inside the tent, one of our favourite details
Weight 88 kg (Wide), 85 kg (Standard) Not measured by us

The Wide gives you 15 cm more mattress width for 3 kg and 800 PLN more. The Standard and the Wide in grey are both listed by PACK IT.

FAQ

How long does the Hawk's Nest V2 take to open?

Feldon Shelter says under 30 seconds. For us it is under a minute, with two latches and gas struts doing the lifting.

Can you sleep in it with a toddler?

Yes, we do with Franek, who is almost two. The mattress is comfortable for the whole family, but watch the metal parts inside and the 2.1 m ladder.

What roof rack do you need?

Feldon asks for a three-bar system or a platform with at least six mounting points, bars at least 900 mm apart and a 100 kg dynamic rating. On our GRJ76 we use four Front Runner 1425 mm load bars.

Standard or Wide?

The Wide has a 135 cm mattress against 120 cm on the Standard, for 3 kg and 800 PLN more. Feldon recommends the Wide for large 4x4s.

Final thoughts

One season is a start, not a long-term test. What we can say is that the Hawk's Nest V2 changes the pace of a stop: under a minute and the bed is ready, which leaves more of the evening for the lake and less for the tent. That is what we travel for, looking past the dust and taking things slowly.
